What is Azure Active Directory?

Azure Active Directory (Azure AD) is an updated version of Active Directory (AD) designed specifically for cloud-based applications and services. Azure AD is an identity and access management solution for the cloud that allows users to access cloud-based applications and services using their existing user information and access rights.

The main difference between Azure AD and Active Directory is that Azure AD is cloud-based, while Active Directory is an on-premises solution. Azure AD can be used to manage identities and access rights for both cloud-based and on-premises applications and services.

Azure itself is much larger, offering a wide range of functionality. This can be seen in the feature list below.

What features are available in Azure AD?

After selecting the appropriate Azure AD license, you will gain access to one or more of the following features:

Application management

Authentication

Azure Active Directory for developers

Business-to-Business (B2B)
Manage your guest users and external partners while retaining control over your own corporate data. See the documentation for Azure Active Directory B2B for more information.
Business-to-Customer (B2C)

Conditional Access

Device Management

Hybrid identity

Identity governance

Identity protection
Identify potential vulnerabilities affecting your organization’s identities, configure policies to respond to suspicious activity, and then take appropriate actions to address them. Give your Azure services an automatically managed identity in Azure AD that can authenticate to any Azure AD-supported authentication service, including Key Vault. Managed identities for Azure ressources
Manage, control, and monitor access in your organization. This feature includes access to resources in Azure AD and Azure, and other Microsoft Online Services such as Microsoft 365 or Intune. See Azure AD Privileged Identity Management for more information.
Privileged identity management (PIM)
Manage, control, and monitor access in your organization. This feature includes access to resources in Azure AD and Azure and other Microsoft Online Services such as Microsoft 365 or Intune. See Azure AD Privileged Identity Management for more information.
Reports and monitoring
Manage, control, and monitor access in your organization. This feature includes access to resources in Azure AD and Azure reporting and monitoring.

Azure AD for the IT department

IT administrators use Azure Active Directory (Azure AD) to regulate access to applications and app resources in accordance with business needs. For example, as an IT administrator, you can use Azure AD to require multi-factor authentication when accessing important organizational resources. Additionally, Azure AD can automate user account deployment between the existing Windows Server AD and cloud-based applications, including Microsoft 365. Finally, Azure AD provides strong tools to protect user identities and credentials and meet access management requirements in an automated manner.

Azure AD connect

Azure AD Connect is an on-premises Microsoft application designed to meet and achieve your hybrid identity goals. If you’re considering how best to meet your goals, you should also consider the cloud-managed solution, Azure AD Connect cloud sync.

The use of Azure AD Connect Health?

Using a hybrid solution, Azure Active Directory (Azure AD) Connect Health ensures robust monitoring of your on-premises identity infrastructure, allowing you to maintain a reliable connection to Microsoft 365 and Microsoft Online Services. By providing monitoring capabilities for your critical identity components, Azure AD Connect Health ensures the reliability of your key components while also making it easy to access the most important data points about these components.

The information is presented in the Azure AD Connect Health portal. Use the Azure AD Connect Health portal to view alerts, performance monitoring, usage analytics, and other information. Azure AD Connect Health enables a single health lens for your key identity components in one place.
