Complete backup solution for Microsoft 365
How it works:
Backup of data in the cloud
Why is Datto SaaS Protection for Microsoft 365 necessary?
As more companies move their data to cloud-based applications like Microsoft 365, many believe that backup is unnecessary. But in fact, one in three companies reports that they have lost data stored in the cloud.
Backup is just as important in the cloud, as it is in traditional local IT systems. An independent, third-party backup solution is the best way to protect your business data from the most common causes of data loss:
Microsoft recommends third-party backup as the only way to recover lost data due to ransomware or malware.
When a user deletes data intentionally or unintentionally, it goes in the Recycle Bin, where it is stored for 90 days. Then it is permanently deleted without the option of recreating it.
Data overwriting may occur, but with Datto SaaS Protection for Microsoft 365, you can avoid overwriting data and differentiate between saved data from Exchange, OneDrive, and SharePoint for extra protection.
When employees leave a company, their licenses typically become inactive, which means that their user data is deleted without the option of recreating it.
If a Microsoft server crashes, the downtime may result in data loss. In addition, app interruptions will mean that your employees do not have access to essential data, which will have a direct impact on productivity and revenue.
Microsoft 365’s limited recovery features
Microsoft 365 is not automatically protected
Unfortunately, many companies mistakenly believe that Microsoft automatically protects your data. This is also partly correct. Microsoft makes sure that they do not lose your data, but they do not guarantee that they can recover your data if you delete it. In other words, Microsoft 365 data is vulnerable to both unintentional and intentional deletion, ransomware, and other types of data loss, as described earlier.
As a result, Microsoft recommends back up from third-party solutions such as Datto, if you want data protection, business continuity, compliance, and security policies that go beyond Microsoft 365’s limited recovery features.
“We strive to keep the Services up and running; however, all online services suffer occasional disruptions and outages, and Microsoft is not liable for any disruption or loss you may suffer as a result. In the event of an outage, you may not be able to retrieve Your Content or Data that you’ve stored. We recommend that you regularly backup Your Content and Data that you store on the Services or store using Third-Party Apps and Services.”
For example, there is typically only a 30-day retention period built into Office 365, and Microsoft SharePoint Online is backed up only every 12 hours with a 14-day retention period.
Microsoft’s primary focus is managing infrastructure and maintaining uptime for users. The responsibility for your data lies with you.
Microsoft 365 offers geo-redundancy, which is often confused with backup. Geo-redundancy means that a copy of data is made, which is stored in Germany. Geo-redundancy protects against site or hardware failures, for example in the event of an infrastructure crash or interruption but does not protect against other types of data loss, as previously mentioned.
